Gabriel Fallopius, one of the most influential anatomists and physicians of the 16th century, was born in Modena in 1523.

Despite coming from a noble but poor family, Fallopius worked hard to obtain a worthy education. Due to financial difficulties, he joined the clergy. In 1542, Gabriel became a canon at the Modena Cathedral. He studied medicine at the University of Ferrara, which was the best medical school in Europe at the time.
