    Edgar Kahn (1904-1970) is autographing a copy of his best seller "Cable Car Days in San Francisco." Published in 1940 by Stanford University Press "Cable Car Days in San Francisco" would be the first book and most successful book published about San Francisco's cable car, having multiple printings.

    This oil painting of Andrew Smith Hallidie by the artist, Harriet Foster Beecher (1854-1915) was completed in 1901, a year after Hallidie’s death.

    Evidence suggests that the painting was commissioned by the University of California or a friend(s) of the university. Hallidie was active as a regent of the University of California from the first meeting of the board in 1868 to his death, serving as a regent longer than any other regent.
