Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar was born on August 24, 1956, in Sokoto.
He became the 20th Sultan of Sokoto, the spiritual leader of Nigeria's Muslims. His father, Sir Siddiq Abubakar III, also held this important position for over fifty years.
Abubakar attended Barewa College in Zaria and later joined the Nigerian Defence Academy.
